Maskelynite is a type of glass found in some meteorites and meteorite impact craters; created by the vitrification of the mineral plagioclase by shock melting or meteorite impacts.
Typically similar in composition to plagioclase, and reverting to this mineral when melted and recrystallized.
Named for British geologist M.H.N. Story-Maskelyne.
First written up from the Shergotty Martian meteorite, Gaya District, Bihar, India. The Dhofar378 meteorite is 47% maskelynite by volume.
