Description

Nice matrixless trilobite completely replaced/fossilized in calcite. It is an enrolled Phacops rana africanus from an outcrop of the Middle Devonian limes located to the South of the Erfoud village. It is a complete, text book trilobite, very well preserved were all details can be perfectly observed. The most striking feature of the morphology of this Phacops rana and its relatives is their eyes. According to Burton & Eldredge (1974), that first described this subspecies, these differed from the eyes of most trilobites in having comparatively few lenses spaced between deep sclera. The lenses themselves were very rounded instead of largely flat. The eyes were mounted on turret-like structures which could swivel, providing the animal with an almost 360-degree field of view. This type of eye is known as the schizochroal eye.

It was found in 2019.
