Shomiokite-(Y)

Description Tabs

Description
Locality:
Poudrette Quarry, Mont Saint-Hilaire, Québec, Canada
Size Range:
Small cabinet (7-10 cm)
Size:
5 × 7 × 3 cm
Description

This specimen has several areas with shomiokite-(Y). Four have arrows pointing to them, but there are others. Shomiokite is rare at MSH (although it was locally “abundant” in a small portion of the Poudrette pegmatite). Examples of well terminated xls are few and far between. A few are shown in the main photo (FOV 6.9 x 4.5 mm). Not often available. The thickest xls are shown in the second photo (FOV 6.7 x 4.7 mm). Some of the pale greenish-yellow prisms have sharp edges, but the xls abut aegirine, so there are no true terminations here. This is the typical situation at MSH. Many of the xls on this specimen have a scaly white coating, probably adamsite-(Y) - but not analyzed. Both species exhibit REE absorption lines, but they cannot be distinguished on that basis. The shomiokite is naked eye visible, but you need 10-20X to view the xls. This sample was found July 2002. Weight 3.4 oz.

Seller's terms and conditions

In addition to the standard terms and conditions, please note the following. Almost all IDs are visual. While in most cases the ID is obvious, there may be cases where it is not. If you are doubtful about a particular ID, please ask for more information. Or do not bid! Similarly, if you are not sure that the specimen meets your criteria, do not bid. I have tdone the best I can with the photos. Nevertheless, if you are not happy with a specimen for any reason, I will refund the bid price – but not the shipping costs (unless the fault is clearly mine) – if the specimen is returned. This policy applies even if analysis of the specimen shows that my ID was incorrect. When in doubt, ask - or don’t bid. Note that most crystals at MSH and Varennes are micros - even if on large specimens. Please pay attention to the stated sizes. Any customs duties, fees etc. are the responsibility of the buyer.
