Description

Cinnabar specimens from Idria are scarce nowadays. This is an excellent, quite big example of rough mercury ore - massive cinnabar var corallinerz (german 'Korallenerz'). This synonym is very old, mentioned at beginning of 18th century in context with the Idria mines and is probably from the reddish color of the ore.
It is an amorphous mixture of cinnabar, clay and coal with typical curved lamellar structures and some slight reddish reflections. Sometimes hydrocarbons (Idrialite) are also present.

One of the best old-time corallinerz specimens I offered so far; it comes with antique label of Hans Jaklin who was an austrian collector and mineralogist, born in 1874. He may have been a Royal Imperial "Mining academician" (k.k. Bergakademiker).
His mineral collection consisted almost exclusively of specimens from Austro-Hungarian localities. The Krantz mineral dealership obtained his mineral collection. All labels are squares of brown paper, rubber-stamped with his name in purple ink.
