Description

This is a partly transparent single crystal of the green peridot variety of forsterite with well-formed termination.

Minerals from Egypt are extremely rare on the markets in general, and this is a true ancient rarity. St. John's Island is considered the original locality for Peridot and it dates back to old Egyptian times. Specimens from this historic locale were last mined in the early 1900's. Additionally, this remote island is currently part of the Gebel Elba National Park, situated in souteast egypt, at the sudanese border, and stricly no workings are allowed.
Thus, this material is extremely hard to come by on the markets and is in both color and form quite distinct from the much more common Pakistani material mined in the late 1990's. I was able to acquire a few specimens from an egyptian dealer some time ago.
