Description

Kimberlite, a rare variety of peridote, is an igneous rock containing high proportions of olivin and phlogopite. It mostly occurs in vulcanic pipes, structurs formed by the immense power of a eruption, conveying matter with supersonic speed, from very deep origin volcanos, which are at least three times deeper than normal volcanos. These highly seldom events are prone to enable diamonds and xenocrysts. Even though none are visible, this sample could still contain diamonds. The other exhibited structures are numerous cenocrysts and xenoliths. Xenoliths are fragments of older rocks transported into the kimberlite. The much rarer xenocrysts on the other hand, are different types of crystals, formed somewhere else and then transported within flowing lava. The literal greek translation of them would be "alienstone" and "aliencrystal". The multiple xenocrystals visible on this beautiful specimen are hard to classify for sure, but these inclusions could most likely be ilmenite (sparkly, tabular, dark grey crystal blades), clinoproxene (rusty red, amorphic spheres), garnet (shiny, deep red dots) and olivin (shiny, light green cristals).
